How to start your own garden

If you’re lucky enough to have a blank canvas in your back garden that needs a little love, spring is a great time to get started with your garden design. Those without any gardening experience may be a little daunted by the task of starting their own garden. But with the following tips, you can transform your green space just in time for summer and become a dab hand at gardening in no time at all.

Remember no garden is going to be perfect

Even experienced gardeners have to face the fact that no garden will ever be perfect. In fact, nurturing an imperfect garden is fun and will help you learn all the gardening lessons you need to make your outdoor space the beautiful place it should be.

This being said, every gardener (whether experienced or amateur) will face failures. Whether it’s a garden craft project that hasn’t turned out quite right or a batch of home grown produce that’s failed to come to fruition, there’s plenty of mistakes to be made. Learning from these however is the key to becoming an even better gardener.

Start small by conquering the basics

Ensuring your garden is suitably prepped before you forge ahead with your grand designs is vital. Mastering basics like weeding, mulching and feeding will stand you in good stead as you continue to nurture your garden long into the future. A well-tended garden will always look great, whatever its design, so start your new garden with care.

Break up your project into manageable chunks

In the spirit of starting small, break up your garden project into a series of manageable tasks. Many people who are starting from scratch with garden design, choose to incorporate ‘zones’ for this very reason.

By designing your garden as a series of separate spaces – i.e. borders, fruit and vegetable planters, lawned areas, hard landscaped sections etc. -  you can focus on one job at a time before bringing together each part to enjoy the bigger picture.

Get creative with your garden planting

These days you can be as creative as you like with garden planting. Flowers, plants, shrubs and other foliage make excellent eye candy in every garden, which makes planting a worthy way to spend your time in the garden.

As well as incorporating borders that are bursting with blooms, use walls, obelisks and garden arches to plant vertically. Fill pots and planters to ensure colourful additions to patios, decks and other hard landscaped areas.
